Background
Pre History
A student of the Shotokan school of karate, Ryu has devoted his entire life to perfecting the true way of the warrior through mastery of the fireball. It is this devotion that makes Ryu the eternal enemy of Sagat. Now Ryu must stand tall against revitalized rivals.
Pre History
Ryu lives only for the fight and seeks opponents stronger than himself. He fights using the art of Ansatsuken as taught to him by his master, Gouken.
Marvel vs Capcom
Ryu
Ryu was an orphan adopted by a martial arts master and taught a purified form of Ansatsuken, the “assassin’s fist.” Ryu entered and won the World Warrior martial arts tournament to test his skill, starting a never-ending quest of self-improvement. This quest comes with a risk: the Satsui no Hado, a power that tempts practitioners of Ansatsuken with an all-consuming murderous intent. Dark forces have tried to harness this power from Ryu in the past. Hopefully, history won’t repeat itself.
The Heroes' Challenge
The eternal challenger, Ryu seeks true strength.
The Ultimate Challenge!
The legendary street fighter seeks the true way of the warrior. Can he ultimately master the Fireball?
Fate of Two Worlds
Ryu's name gained great recognition among martial artists after he defeated the Muay Thai king in a fight. However, instead of claiming his fame, Ryu began to wander the globe, hoping to become a true warrior. He continues his journey, engaging in battles with fighters he meets along the way.

Street Fighter 3 Endings
Ryu's lift: Oakland is to the left. Are you sure you want to get off here? You've still got 30 miles to go.
Ryu: Yes. I'm sure. Thanks. There's still some sunlight left. I think I can make it there on foot. Ken, I'll keep fighting... training... and searching... Wait for me warriors... I live for your challenge.
Street Fighter 3: Third Strike Endings
Ryu: "What is a true warrior?" "Why should I be strong? What awaits beyond victory?" Since the days of my youth, these thoughts have never left my mind. I had to decide... Either to stop asking myself those questions... ...or to struggle to find the answers... ! Hmm. I'm not close. I can't even tell where the leaves will fall... As long as strong opponents and fierce battles excite me... As long as I possess the strength to move even one of my fingers... ...I will keep on fighting!
Street Fighter Alpha 2 Endings
Akuma: You possess the same power as I. When the "Evil intent" awakens within you, then you will know. All these past battles will seem like child's play.
Ryu: W... what?! The island... it's... it's disappearing!?
Akuma: When you have learned to summon all your inner power, find me. Then we will truly learn who is more powerful.
As Akuma's island disappears... ...So does Akuma. Leaving behind the feeling of his evil presence.
Ryu: AKUMA!!
Left only with the sense of his untapped powers... ...Akuma's words give Ryu yet another test. Ryu's journey, to be a true warrior, is never ending.
Street Fighter EX2
Ryu has evolved the three secret techniques to their utmost limits. Although to the ordinary person his fists might seem perfect, for Ryu himself he is still training. Having overcomed the Satsui no Hadou, he is now seeking to achieve untainted true strenght. "The world has an unknown strength. I should continue seeking it and witness it until the day this body rots away."
Street Fighter: The Movie (Arcade) endings
As Bison's empire falls, Ryu leaves his fighting days behind as he turns his talents toward rebuilding the city of Shadaloo. The lessons he has learned from the teachings of Master Sheng Long help greatly in bringing dignity and prosperity to the war-ravaged land.
Street Fighter: The Movie (Console) endings
After the defeat of General Bison and the rest of his forces, Ryu and Ken assisted in the reconstruction of Shadaloo City. But, just as the city began to return to normal, Ken started planning their next big score. Soon they were packed and on the road with Ken looking to make some quick money and Ryu just trying to make sure that Ken doesn't get them into any more trouble than they can handle.
Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo Revival Endings
"Does this mean that I am now the world's strongest fighter?"

"No, it can't be... There must be stronger" warriors in the world!"

"...OK! I must continue my search for someone stronger than me!"

Defining the essence of the world warrior, Ryu shall forever search for the ultimate battle...
Street Fighter Alpha 3
Ryu is a man following the path to become a true martial artist.
What is the meaning of the "evil energy" building within him?
He continues his journey to find the answers, and new challenges.
The Tournament Begins
Ryu, the black belt from Japan, has given up all earthly delights in this pursuit of pure fighting excellence. Trained by his stepfather, for many years he has studied with Ken, his only friend. His single-minded dedication resulted in his championship win over Sagat, but now all that is up for grabs. Although he is one of the smallest fighters, he is also one of the toughest.
The Tournament Begins Anew
Ryu is the definition of the lone-wolf street fighter. His stern determination to become a master of his fighting style has inspired many fellow martial artists. His training is his life and he will do whatever it takes to perfect his technique.

When Ryu was a boy, a master martial artist named Gouken adopted him. The young boy grew under Gouken’s care, learning his unnamed fighting techniques with his best friend and fellow student, Ken Masters. Once Ryu turned 23, Gouken deemed him ready to leave the dojo and test his skills against the best fighters in the world at the first World Warrior Tournament. Ryu won the contest, but the championship fight with Sagat, the Emperor of Muay Thai, was brutal and released dark power called the Satsui no Hadou from inside the warrior. Though he came out victorious, Ryu was still troubled by the experience and became unsure about his own powers. It is only after the comforting words of his best friend that Ryu began to understand that there is still much he has to learn about himself and his fighting style.

The Satsui no Hadou, or Surge of Murderous Intent, is similar to M. Bison’s Psycho Power and Ryu strives to avoid using it at all costs in order to keep true to his sensei’s peaceful teachings. But there are those who wish to use Ryu and harness the power of the Satsui no Hadou for themselves, including the CEO of S.I.N. and head of the new tournament, Seth.
Super Street Fighter IV
Ryu lives only for the fight and seeks opponents stronger than himself. He fights using the art of Ansatsuken as taught to him by his master, Gouken.
Capcom vs SNK 2
Capcom vs SNK 2 Endings
Utilizing skill and power has led Ryu to victory. But today's victory is only a small step towards his goal... And so Ryu continues his search for the perfect battle.
Pocket Fighter
Pocket Fighter
Ryu continues on his quest to become a true warrior.
Now, he wishes to see a lady named Tessa. He has heard much about her during his journeys.
She is said to be wise, with a detailed knowledge of just about everything in the world.
Ryu: I might be able to learn more about the strongest fighters in the world... I should find her and ask about it.
Pocket Fighter Endings
Tessa: Indeed... You are strong. I surrender. Hmmm... Who can match your strength... Let me see... You should go and see a "Hauzer" in Savalia.
Ryu: A guy named Hauzer... Thank you. I'll go forth and find him. I'm sure it's supposed to be somewhere around here... ...What!?
Hauzer: Guwooohhh!!
Ryu: I... is this Hauzer!? (I... I might lose... But I will put everything I have into the fight...)
Tessa: Oh shoot! I forgot to tell him that no one who has seen Hauzer has come back alive ...Hee hee hee.
Street Fighter X Tekken
Master of the Hado
A wandering street fighter who trains rigorously in order to become a true martial artist. Studied the art of Ansatsuken from his master Gouken, but does not wield it to take lives. He wishes to test his mettle against fighters around the world in order to find an answer in the heart of battle. He searches for Pandora to see if there is a connection between it and the Satsui no Hado.
Tatsunoko vs. Capcom
Ultimate All-Stars
Ryu is a dedicated martial artist who aspires to become a true fighter. He tirelessly wanders the globe looking for stronger opponents to ensure he continues to improve upon his techniques and strength. He has previously revealed in other VS series his desire to gain the mutual respect of his opponents strictly through battle. His special Hadoken and Shoryuken moves are, inarguably, his trademarks.

Fun Facts
Copykugenryu Cat
As Dan is to Art of Fighting, so is Yuri to Street Fighter. Since KoF98, she has inherited at least move from Capcom's signature shotos per game albeit subtely renamed and reanimated.
1001 Hadoukens
In the game "Aban Hawkins and the 1001 Spikes," the shop contains a karate gi outfit. On purchase, the main character Aban is roped into a scheme wherein he goes to "Fighting Street" and meets "warriors from around the world."

The costume is clearly SF1 Ryu down to the red hair, but includes alternate palettes for Evil Ryu, Ken, and Dan. In-game Aban's throwing knives are replaced with fireballs and hurricane kicks, and his high jump with an invincible shoryuken. Certain stages' music is replaced with a SF2-style remix of the game's main theme.
Protoryuken
Prototype versions of Ryu and Ken exist in the ROM for the original Street Fighter. Limited to just one sprite each, these prototypes nonetheless show a number of differences compared with their final versions. Ryu's footwear and gloves are brown rather than red, his hair is shorter (more akin to subsequent depictions) and he has a meaner facial expression! Ken's prototype shows him wearing a red bandana, brown footwear and gloves whereas his final version omits the slippers and headband and changes the colour of his gloves to yellow. In addition, an unfinished arena is also present in the ROM. It is unlike any of the stages in the final game but clearly was abandoned early on in development as it is very rough; limited to just a black and blue outline.
