A monk and yoga master from India who has served as a guide for countless suffering souls. Prefers to avoid conflict when possible, but his innate hatred of evil compels him to dispense stern justice.
Background
Pre History
The Indian monk Dhalsim fights for his people who suffer from famine and disease. He is a Yoga master who drifts through life and does not try to change his fate. He has sought to unify his mind, body and soul through the discipline of Yoga. As he nears his goal, Dhalsim must test himself and his skills before he can rise to a higher state of consciousness.

The personifaction of Agni, God of Fire, he breathes a fake flame which only causes the neccessary amount of damage to defeat an opponent. Dhalsim, the warrior of the mind-surpassing flame who fights an unavoidable battle for the sake of refugees. Dhalsim, who is usually thinking philosophically, could not think of anything today except his physical training. "You will now bear witness to the enlighten soul of Yoga."
The Tournament Begins
Through the ancient discipline of meditation, Dhalsim seeks to unify his body and spirit to achieve a true Yoga consciousness. In his native India, he is rumored to practice his mantra more than 25 hours a day, which some say proves that he has conquered both space and time. His Yoga arts have carried him far as a fighter, too, but he wishes no harm to his competitors and never holds a grudge.
The Tournament Begins Anew
Dhalsim is generally a pacifist, an Indian mystic who only fights when he is forced to and will deviate from his nonviolent beliefs if his village is in danger. Although he looks hard and serious, he is very caring. The skulls he wears around his neck is in remembrance of the children in his village that died during a plague. Dhalsim is a long-range fighter and his intense yoga training has granted him mastery of fire techniques and the ability to contort his body in impossible ways. With his village threatened once again, he readies himself for combat.

Fun Facts
What could have been
According to game co-developer Alan Noon (who also played Blade and his palette-swapped cohorts in the game), Capcom initially did not specify that the game would be based on the movie, just that it would be a new Street Fighter with digitized graphics, using actors for the movie. Under the impression that they were designing Street Fighter III, Noon and the rest of the team came up with a list of fighters that included Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, E. Honda, Sagat, Vega, Cammy, Akuma, M. Bison, Blanka, Dee Jay, Fei Long, Dhalsim, Sheng Long (Gouken), Geki, Retsu, Lee, Gunloc, and Mega Man.
