Guardian of Outworld’s Royal Family
Chosen as an infant from Outworld’s first-born daughters, Tanya was raised by the Umgadi’s priestesses. She’s never known her birth family.
As she grew older and saw other initiates wash out, Tanya feared that she would share their fate. But that fear spurred success; after many attempts, Tanya passed her trials and became a full Umgadi.
Over time, Tanya became one of the order’s most trusted members. She was the obvious choice when it needed to choose a new leader for the royal family’s personal guard.
As an Umgadi, Tanya is sworn to piety and chastity. That is why her bond with Princess Mileena, were it known, would cause a scandal. By following her heart, Tanya risks not only her position but also her life.
Mileena
Companion
A formal romantic involvement. Husband/Wife by law, or boy/girlfriend otherwise.
Mortal Kombat
A New Dimension of Kombat
As the daughter of Edenia's ambassador to new realms, Tanya invites a group of refugees fleeing their own world into the safety of Edenia. But soon after Queen Sindel allows them through the portal, she learns that one of the warriors is none other than the banished elder god, Shinnok. The portal leads into the pits of the netherealm itself, and the once free realm of Edenia is now at the mercy of Shinnok.
Return of the Dragon King
"I had been called an enforcer of the Deadly Alliance. I preferred the term "ambassador". It was my duty to impose the will of Quan Chi and Shang Tsung upon the denizens of Outworld. But the sorcerers' rule was short-lived and I found myself leaderless, longing to return to my birthplace in Edenia. When Baraka caught up with me, he gave me a choice: serve his new lord of Outworld -- or die. I have lived for thousands of years because I make the right decisions. I pledged my service to the Dragon King."

"Onaga was aware of Shao Kahn's invasion of Edenia so many years ago. Apparently the Dragon King had been watching Shao Kahn from beyond death. Whatever the late emperor had been attempting, Onaga was determined to complete it. He was looking for lost information, ancient spells that would fuse the Elder Gods' six Kamidogu into one and therefore make it possible for him to wield their combined might. I have brought him to Edenia, where I believed that information still existed." -Tanya
MK Armageddon Endings
The fire of Blaze transformed Tanya into a being known as a Dragon Caller. With a mere thought, she was able to summon dragon spirits from the ether into corporeal form.

With an army of dragons at her command, she conquered the universe realm by realm. Soon Shao Kahn himself would call her "master."

Fun Facts
It's a Boon to be king.
Both Sonya and Tanya are named after MK series co-creator Ed Boon's sisters.
Kitanya
Much of MK4's newcomer cast originally started as returning characters, but they were replaced by pastiches to give the cast more new faces. Of note is the replacing of Kitana with Tanya; either Kitana was replaced late in development, or Eurocom (the company responsible for the home ports) designed a palette swap of Kitana for the home versions that was left unfinished; there exists in the coding of the Playstation, Nintendo 64, and PC versions a buggy recolored Tanya that is named "Kitana" and has a medley of moves from other characters. The console versions even give her the fan as a weapon. This faux Kitana can be access via game enhancer in the console versions and an external trainer program in the PC version. Whatever the case, Midway openly acknowledged that the blurry Kitana that appears in Liu Kang's ending uses the same model as Tanya.

This connection between the two characters may explain why Khameleon borrows a move from Tanya in MK Armageddon despite the latter not actually existing as one of the "female ninja" that Khameleon normally mimics.
